What is Friends and Advocates Centre?

Friends and Advocates Centre is a non-profit, non-medical, consumer/survivor initiative that helps and supports
consumer/survivors who have been diagnosed with mental illness to re-establish themselves in the community.

Friends and advocates is run by its members for its members. The program provides low cost recreational activities and an
opportunity to develop relationships with others who have had similar situations.

How does it work?

Friends and advocates is a self-help/mutial aid group which provides an opportunity for individuals to obtain support and to
offer support, as well, through friendship with others who have been through similar experiences.

You may become a member of Friends and Advocates by telephoning the office to arrange an appointment. The only
qualifications for membership are that you must be over the age of 16 and have a psychiatric diagnosis. Self-referrals are
welcome. Membership is free and services are provided on a confidential basis.

What does Friends and Advocates Centre do?

•        provides an opportunity for socialization to those recovering from mental illness or emotional distress,

•        arranges, with the help from members, social and recreational activities in the community to improve socialization and        
      communication skills,

•        holds interesting discussion groups and recovery based sessions to develop interpersonal skills,

•        educates community groups and individuals about mental health while providing partnerships with community agencies,

•        speaks out and advocates for members about mental health issues,

•        provides crisis intervention/prevention for members,

•        provides a leadership training program and peer support development for members, and

•        provides volunteer opportunities for members.
